The comic book art of the golden years was filled with sadomasochistic imagery. (Wonder Woman’s golden lasso, anyone?) That’s no surprise to anyone. But the fact that Joe Shuster, co-creator of Superman, illustrated an entire run of BDSM pr0n … that’s news.
But you won’t have to hunt through crumbling pulps to find hot images of Lois Lane whipping a bound Superman. She’s right there on the cover of Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-creator Joe Shuster, by Craig Yoe, the noted comics historian.
I haven’t seen the book yet, but the web site is fascinating.

I don’t know if anyone has done any research on Margaret Brundage, one of the regular cover illustrators for Weird Tales. Her fetish art was in her covers: one of the ones that fascinates me the most has a woman strapped to a giant wheel, so her body is curved backwards, being menaced by a giant alien.
Ooh, thank you! There’s James’s birthday present right there. :-)
